Divorce, delinquent behaviour and substance use among adolescents: The role of parental characteristics

Divorce as well as the complex post-marital family situation is often associated with negative child outcomes like lower academic achievement, reduced psychological wellbeing and an increased risk of problematic behaviour. Although this negative impact on children is replicated in many empirical studies, other research finds in contrast that children of divorce are not always worse off than children of intact families. Whether this is the case is influenced by the interactions in the new family, the amount of conflict between the ex-spouses and the relationship between parent and child.
